Facts

  • It is a mishmash of styles, having been constructed in two phases, decades apart. The building was originally modeled after a Greek Temple, and served as the First Universalist Church.
  • The building was enlarged by French Canadian catholics around 1880, in a French Gothic style.
  • It stands near the site where, in 1680, Father Louis Hennepin, a Belgian priest, became the first European to gaze on the Mississippi River's St. Anthony Falls.
  • The church has been a noted National Historic Landmark since 1934.
  • Our Lady of Lourdes is the oldest continuously-operating church in Minneapolis.
