It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
The design of the Hotel Fort Des Moines follows a formula typical of its era. It consists of a nine story u-shaped block - permitting light and air to a maximum number of rooms - atop a two-story base dedicated to public and commercial spaces.
The elevation is divided into the classic base, shaft, and crown, with ornamentation concentrated at the lower levels and just under the cornice line.
