Facts

  • Overall, the effect of this design is one of lightness, clarity, and restraint.
  • The design uses the Neo-Classical tripartite formula of base, shaft, and capital. The three-story base includes design references to the Italian and Spanish Renaissance, while the plainer upper section is set off with two-story pilasters and a wide cornice. The stone in the middle section is cut with little sense of depth, creating a nearly flat surface almost in the spirit of modernism.
  • The design of this limestone-clad building emphasizes the two street facades, leaving the other two unadorned.
  • The former First National Bank Building was named one of the 50 Most Significant Iowa Buildings of the 20th Century by the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
  • The First National Bank Building stood here until destroyed by fire in 1923.
