Facts

• It was the tallest building in Canada west of Toronto at the time of completion.
• The opening ceremonies were held on July 15, 1971. A 15x5x20" time capsule was cemented into the building to stay in place as long as the building stands. Contents of the capsule included such items as phone books, newspapers, maps and a pre-1900 glass insulator.
• A seldom used helicopter landing pad was a part of the design. The first landing occurred in September of 1971 when (then) CBC National News anchorman Lloyd Robertson arrived for a charity promotional event.
• The original design proposal had vertical but no horizontal outward components on the facade.
• Every Christmas season since 1987 the south facade is adorned with four giant Christmas trees. The trees are comprised of 110 strings of 3000 coloured lights. Each tree flashes on and off intermittently.
