Facts
- The church was heavily damaged once again in 1943 by Allied bombing. Much of the ruins were cleared in the 1950s, leaving the tower to stand alone. The parish of St. Nikolai rebuilt in a different location.
- The present ruins of St. Nikolai were constructed following a devastating city-wide fire in 1842.
- Ironically St Nikolaikirche was designed by the British architect George Gilbert Scott in 1874, but destroyed by British and Allied aircraft in World War 2.
- St Nikolai has the fourth tallest Gothic spire in the world after Ulm, Cologne and Rouen.
