Facts
- The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
- The design for the Oakland City Hall resulted from a national competition. It is clad in white granite and terra cotta. There are three set-back sections: a 3-story podium, a 10-story office tower, and a 2-story base supporting a 91 ft. ornamental clocktower donated by onetime mayor Dr. Samuel Merritt.
- Following the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, the Oakland City Hall became one of the largest buildings to be seismically separated from its foundations - an outstanding feat of engineering.
