• The column was erected to commemorate Lord Rowland Hill, the city's most celebrated soldier who fought alongside the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo.
• At 40.6 metres (133.5 feet), the structure is the world's largest Grecian Doric column.
• The column is .6 metres (2 feet) wider than that of Nelson's Column and - pedestal aside - is 4.7 metres (13 feet) taller.
• The statue at top is 5 metres (17 feet) in height.
• The height of the column's pedestal is 4.1 metres (13.5 feet) whilst the combined height of the shaft and capital is 27.9 metres (91.5 feet).
• The statue's pedestal is 3.2 metres (11.5 feet) high.
• The column's diameter at the plinth is 4.6 metres (15 feet) tapering to 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) at the capital.
• The is an open air viewing platform below the statue.
• The foundation stone was laid by local Freemasons.
• The column is of Grinshill stone whilst the statue is fashioned from the artificial stone known as coadestone and is by Panzetta.
• The final cost was 5,972 pounds, 13 shillings and 2 pence.
