  • Named in honor of Mecklenburg County native James K. Polk who served as the 11th President of the United States between 1844 and 1848.
  • Saw an extensive renovation in 1981 into state offices that resulted in the addition of the modernist staircases on the western side.
  • Due to its deteriorating state, at one time it was rumored that this would be demolished to make way for a parking garage for nearby Johnson & Wales University Charlotte Campus.
  • Slated for demolition in late 2006 to make way for 500 West Trade.
