• The Forbes and Wallace Store stood on the site of Monarch Place.
• The Sanborn Fire Insurance Map indicates a main roof height (excluding penthouse construction) of 96' (29 m).
• Springfield's leading retail establishment, it was begun at the corner of Main and Vernon in 1874 by Alwxander Forbes and Andrew Wallace.
• By the mid-20th Century it had grown into a complex of six buildings taking up nearly the entire block.
• The store was closed in 1976, and the buildings remained vacant until demolition in 1982.
