Facts

  • Groundbreaking took place on January 24, 1966.
  • The building topped out at 13 floors in September 1966 with plans for 7 additional floors added to the top of the structure by 1972. However, construction resumed in early 1967 to the full height of 20 floors.
  • The grand opening celebration took place on June 19, 1968.
  • This is the purest example of an International Style Skyscraper in Saint Paul.
  • The building stands on a sloping site, with two additional floors overground from the Cedar Street side.
  • The corporate complex occupies an entire block, including the Ecolab University Center, just to the north.
  • In an odd twist, the Ecolab University Center can be reached internally only through the skyway level of the Alliance Bank Center, located to the northeast, across Cedar Street.
  • The clean, simple lines of the stainless steel and black granite were chosen to promote Ecolab's corporate identity as one of the world's largest makers of sanitary products.
  • It was originally called the Osborn Building, after company founder Merritt J. Osborn.
  • This was the tallest building completed in St. Paul during the 1960s.
  • The Tri-State Telephone Cedar Exchange and Hotel Jewell formerly stood on this site, facing East 5th Street. The Astoria Hotel stood on the plaza to the west, facing Wabasha Street.
