Facts
- According to a Building Fact Sheet, the east and west wings are 98 feet 11 inches tall.
- Tallest building in Indiana from 1962-1970, when One Indiana Square was completed.
- This was the first building in Indianapolis to rise higher than the Soldiers & Sailors Monument.
- An indoor observation deck is located on the 28th floor. It is reached by freight elevator to the 26th floor and then by a separate elevator to the 28th floor.
- Ground was broken on February 1, 1960; the cornerstone was laid on December 21, 1960, and first occupancy occurred on January 2, 1962.
- The building served to consolidate the government for the city of Indianapolis, the nine townships of Marion County, the Indianapolis Police Department, and the Marion County Courts. It preceded UNIGOV by almost 10 years.
- Many city government functions moved here from the Old Indianapolis City Hall, and the previous Marion County Courthouse that stood on the same block just to the south was eventually demolished.
- This is the tallest building in Indianapolis completed during the 1960s.
- This remains the tallest building in the city designed solely by Indianapolis-based architects.
- The building is on the north side of the block, set back from Washington Street. This open plaza was the site of the original Marion County Courthouse, demolished after this building was completed.
