About
Vienna
The history of Vienna dates back over 2000 years when a roman army camp named "VINDOBONA" was founded next to the Danube River. The Roman era ended when Germanic tribes took over the area in the 400s. After the Habsburg family won the crown of the Holy Roman Empire in 1273, they made Vienna their capital and it developed into a city of importance. Following the defeat of Turkish invasions in 1529 and 1683, Vienna blossomed with its new-found security into one of the great capitals of Europe and a center of Baroque architecture. Vienna recovered from WWII in the 50s and 60s, but without the construction of many tall buildings. The United Nations complex of the mid-1970s was one of the few major high-rise developments before the 1992 decision of the city council to create a new high-rise district on the left bank of the Danube, the Donaucity. Along with the fall of the Iron Curtain, this initiated a boom in modern and tall architecture which thus far has no end in sight...
