About
Rochester
Rochester is a major manufacturing center in Upstate New York, located on the Gensee River near Lake Ontario. Called the "Image Capital of the World," it is the headquarters of companies such as Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb, and home to many other industries.

The city was founded in 1812 by Maryland businessman Nathaniel Rochester, who was attracted by the area's resources of water power and rich soil. The opening of the Erie Canal in the mid-1820's brought increased trade and growth. George Eastman invented photographic film here, and began production of photographic plates, cameras, and film under the Kodak name in the 1880's. Kodak remains a major employer in the city today.

Besides industry, Rochester is home to the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the renowned Eastman School of Music. Redevelopment projects downtown during the 1960's and 1970's included Midtown Plaza, the country's first enclosed downtown shopping mall.
