About Jackson
During the American Civil War, the Union army, under the orders of General William Tecumseh Sherman, would burn the city to the ground on three separate occasions. In the time from the reconstruction through the turn of the 20th century, the city would see modest growth and have a population of just over 8,000 by about 1900. It was during the 20th century that Jackson would evolve into Mississippi’s largest city and serve as its cultural and economic powerhouse. Within its boundary one can find the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson State University, the annual International Ballet Competition, Mississippi Museum of Art, and numerous other cultural amenities. Today the city boasts the state’s most impressive skyline with the Metro Cities
