Sumgayit Located on the northern coast of the Apsheron peninsula, on the estuary of the river of the same name, located 35 km north of Baku and with a population of 289,700, Sumgayit is the third largest city in Azerbaijan (after Baku and Ganja).

Sumgayit was founded in 1948. City's major economy is chemistry and oil. The city produces nearly 40 percent of the steel produced in the Caucasus region and also produces synthetic rubber, fertilizers, detergents, and petrochemicals. In order to attract more foreign capital/investment Sumgayit has become a free economic zone.
