When completed, Moscow State University was the 7th-tallest building in the world, and the tallest outside New York City.

The first building outside North America to surpass this building's height was KLI 63 Building in Seoul, completed in 1985.

Moscow State University served as an inspiration for the design of Palace of Culture and Science.

The 57-meter (187-foot) spire is topped by a star decorated with ears of wheat.

This was the tallest building in Europe until 1988, when it was surpassed by MesseTurm. Today it is still one of Europe's tallest.

Included in the building is a large 1500-seat auditorium, 19 conference rooms, 140 classrooms, 6000 student rooms, a student club, a library, numerous scientific laboratories, an agronomy museum, a swimming pool, and various gymnastic halls.

The University in its entirety covers more than 1.6 square kilometers.

Embellished and decorated with many statues, those that attract the most attention are Vera Muchina's statue of two students at the main entrance and N. Tomski's monument dedicated to Mikhail V. Lomonosov (1711-1765; University founder) in the internal court.

Founded on January 12th, 1755, Moscow University is the oldest Russian university. In 1940 on the occasion of its 185th Anniversary, Moscow University was officially named after M.V. Lomonosov.

The university boasts more than 30,000 students.

The star surrounded by ears of wheat at the top of the spire weighs an incredible 12 tons, and is 9 meters in diameter.

It is said, but not confirmed, to have a secret metro station somewhere in the basement.

On 21st April, 2006, a fire broke out in a dormitory section on the 12th floor killing two people, injuring four and resulting in the evacuation of around 1,500 people.
