Facts
The Forbes and Wallace Store stood on the site of Monarch Place.
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Map indicates a main roof height (excluding penthouse construction) of 96' (29 m).
Springfield's leading retail establishment, it was begun at the corner of Main and Vernon in 1874 by Alwxander Forbes and Andrew Wallace.
By the mid-20th Century it had grown into a complex of six buildings taking up nearly the entire block.
The store was closed in 1976, and the buildings remained vacant until demolition in 1982.
