The CNIT amazed the world with its daring design. Its 50 meter vault built on an equilateral triangle with east side measuring 218 meters could have covered the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
The first square meter of concrete was poured on May 8, 1956. The CNIT was inaugurated on September 12, 1958.
The glass elevations (building sides) are held by very thin stainless steel sections. Designed by Jean Prouvé, they were listed as an historical monument and restored when the CNIT was renovated in 1989.
Besides La Grande Arche CNIT is one of the two well-known monuments of the business district La Défense.
