The tallest capitol-type structure ever built in Chicago. The only others were constructed for the 1893 World's Fair, and all have been demolished.
The dome had a hollow center with a monumental public space, but its perimeter was subdivided into separate floors.
Demolished to make way for the new Federal Center. The building occupied an entire city block which is now the site of the post office, the Kluczynski Federal Building, and a large plaza.
