The Neo-Baroque Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament dominates the downtown area of Altoona.
Construction on the Cathedral, begun in 1924 according to the design of George I. Lovett, was halted during the Depression. It did not resume again until 1959, this time under the direction of Alfred D. Reid.
While the limestone exterior was designed as an academic interpretation of Italy's Baroque churches, its interior, featuring aluminum, glass and marble, was influenced by stylistic trends of the late 1950's-early 1960's.
The Cathedral houses a famous organ by G. F. Steinmeyer, installed in 1931.
