Facts
The Missouri State Capitol was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. |
The Missouri State Capitol was built of Carthage marble in an adaptation of Italian Renaissance styles. A 120 foot wide stairway leads up to a portico of Corinthian columns. Engaged columns ring the building on all four elevations. |
It sits in a landscaped park overlooking the Missouri River bluffs. The bronze statue of Ceres atop the lantern is 400 feet above the river. Many other sculptures and friezes ornament the building and grounds. |
The interior features a 68-foot tall rotunda finished mostly in marble and decorated with murals illustrating human progress. |
