Facts
Saint Matthews, organized in 1840, was the second Lutheran congregation in Charleston. It served a congregation of primarily German-speaking settlers.
Spectacular stained glass windows on the interior describe stories from the Bible.
The present Gothic building was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1965.
For decades this was the tallest structure in South Carolina, and to this day remains the state's tallest church.
