The Mississippi State Capitol is similar in design to the National Capitol in Washington. It features a high central dome with a lantern topped by an eight-foot high golden eagle. A large rotunda under the dome organizes the interior spaces.
Symmetrical in plan, it sits on a high terrace overlooking the downtown area.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
Atop the dome rests a copper and gold leafed eagle which measures 8 feet high by 15 feet wide.
Between 1979 and 1983, the capitol underwent a complete restoration at a cost of $19 million.
