Facts
The National Shrine is the largest Roman Catholic church in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth largest in the world. It measures a total of 459 feet long and covers an area of 77,500 square feet.
The tower is called "Knights' Tower" because it was built with a donation from the Knights of Columbus.
The National Shrine contains Pope Paul VI's coronation tiara, of which he relinquished shortly after assuming the role of pope.
This cathedral is done in a hybrid combination style of Byzantium-Romanesque. This church is facaded in limestone.
This is the third-largest church in the United States, after only the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and The Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (or Washington National Cathedral), across the city.
