Named after heiress Lillian Hitchcock Coit (1843-1929), friend of the San Francisco Firefighters Association. |
Coit Tower greets over 250,000 visitors annually. |
After restoration, tower was reopened July 18, 1990. |
Built on the site of the first west coast telegraph, a semaphore completed in 1849. |
Reputedly designed in the shape of a fire-hose nozzle, to commemorate the firefighters in 1906 earthquake. |
Observation deck is 542 feet above sea level. |
Designated City Landmark #165 on January 1, 1984. |
The memorial is a 210 foot high reinforced concrete tower which includes a 26 foot high rectangular base. |
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in late January 2008. |
