Facts
Winner of the 1994 San Francisco Architectural Heritage Award for excellence in architectural preservation for exterior restoration.
The building was built in exactly 300 days.
Office floors were designed with moving partitions.
Ornamental detail is carried inside the lobby and all elevator lobbies.
The top portion of the building's facade is decorated in sepia-glazed terra cotta with blue-green cast concrete spandrels and abstracted shell designs in reference to the building's owner.
Sanborn heights: 301 feet to floor 23, 352 feet to floor 27, 376 feet to top of floor 29.
Shell Oil Company, the building's namesake, ultimately vacated the building during the 1960s.
The two-story mezzanine lobby entrance features bronze doors, marble walls, and a sweeping 25-foot-high ceiling.
