Facts
San Francisco's first glass-walled tower.
Utilities, elevators, and stairways are located in an attached service tower, in a design similar to SOM's Inland Steel Building in Chicago. This allows office floors to be entirely open and free of columns.
The building is set in a triangular landscaped plaza which also includes a circular building designed for a bank's branch operations.
Built at a time Market Street was in decline the tower was turned to face Bush Street, with the outside mosaic tile clad tower, housing the stairs and elevators, facing Market.
The architects were recognized with a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1961.
Designated city landmark on May 17, 1987.
Tishman Speyer acquired this property in an announcement made on December 5, 2004 along with seven other buildings including 595 Market Street.
