Facts
The Richard J. Daley Center is located directly opposite the Cook County Administration Building.
An untitled Picasso sculpture, made of the same brown steel as the building itself, sits in the plaza. Many people have tried to guess what it is: an angel, a lion, a woman, a horse? But when viewed from the northeast the subject becomes visible: the profile of mayor Richard J. Daley!
With 87 feet between columns, the structural bays are so wide that they are often compared to bridges.
Each of the building's piers is shaped in plan like a cross, and gets narrower towards the top as it supports less weight.
Considered for landmark status as early as 2001, only 36 years after completion.
The 26th floor offers a free southern view to anyone willing to undergo the security check. The height at that level is just under 500 feet.
The Daley Center's lower level is the hub of Chicago's pedway system, with tunnels extending east, west, and south.
Tallest building in Chicago from 1965 to 1969; surpassed by the John Hancock Center.
The building's lobby and plaza are frequently used for cultural events and political demonstrations.
This is the tallest flat-roofed building in the world below 40 stories, owing to the high ceilings needed for courtrooms.
