Facts
Headquarters of the Chicago Architecture Foundation. A ground floor exhibit area is open to the public, and the foundation operates a gift shop and bookstore on the Michigan Avenue side.
The building's light well was capped with a skylight in the 1980s and converted to an atrium.
The Chicago Architecture Center opened in July 2001 on the Jackson Street side. It features an architecture timeline, interactive exhibits, and a scale model of Downtown Chicago.
Chicago's largest architecture firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is headquartered here.
The Santa Fe logo on top of the Michigan Avenue facade gives the building high visibility from Grant Park. A similar logo can be found on the Santa Fe Building in Amarillo, Texas.
The building's original saloon, including its mural scenes of ancient Rome, survives as a private conference room of the Chicago Architecture Foundation on the first floor.
A skylit lobby with a grand staircase occupies the bottom two floors under the atrium. The shops, restaurants, and architecture center are all accessible through the lobby as well as the street.
Architect Daniel H. Burnham moved his office here upon its completion, and worked here on his influential 1909 Plan of Chicago.
