Facts
Even though blocked by two other towers, CitySpire is highly visible from Central Park.
Cityspire is New York City's tallest mixed-use skyscraper.
This glass tower of a primarily octagonal plan has short streamlined extension wings, the whole rising in triple setbacks, ending in a domed top at the height of 248 m (814 feet).
The bottom 23 floors of the tower are for commercial use and above it are luxury apartments which increase in size the higher they are.
The building was the 2nd tallest concrete skyscraper in the world when it was completed.
A midblock pedestrian passage was completed on September 15, 1997, after 12 years since being approved by city officials, completing a network of public midblock walkways between West 51st and West 57th streets.
One of the most notorious buildings in the city - an array of minor problems right after completion were exaggerated by the press and local communities.
The tower exceeded the allowed height by a few meters, but the government and residents have exaggerated the problem into a scandal, causing CitySpire owners to create a community center for seniors as a "punishment".
Right after completion, residents in the neighborhood began complaining about a strange whistling noise from the tower which was found to be caused by wind around its dome. The problem was resolved immediately.
Tishman Speyer acquired this property in an announcement made on December 5, 2004, along with 11 other buildings, in a deal worth $1.852 billion.
