The tower originally served as headquarters of the New York Central railroad companies.
Above the elevator doors, bronze reliefs depict a winged helmet surrounding a globe, symbolizing the American empire's global reach.
Purchased in 2005 by Istithmar, an investment firm owned by the royal family of Dubai, for $705 million.
It was announced on December 28, 2007 that the building had sold for $1.15 billion to a group headed by Goldman Sachs.
