Facts
The Grand Bazaar is the world's largest covered building, with over 75 acres of covered area, compared to Washington DC's Pentagon (34 acres) and the Giza Pyramid in Egypt (13 acres).
It is the world's oldest shopping mall, with 25,000 merchants, 4400 shops, 2200 rooms, 40 inns and 65 "covered streets".
It was built during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II "The Conqueror", the Ottoman emperor who took Constantinople (Istanbul) on May 29th, 1453, and made it the new capital city of the Ottoman Empire.
