Facts
This was the tallest residential building in the Loop when it was completed.
In exchange for property rights to a Fannie May candy store at Randolph & Wabash, the developers gave the candy company a 25-year lease in the new building.
Views of Lake Michigan and Grant Park are protected by the presence of the low-rise Chicago Cultural Center on the eastern half of the block, which is an official city landmark.
The facade has concave and convex curves, each topped with a row of vertical piers. This design relects the semicircular peristyle nearby in Millennium Park.
The basement and first two floors hold 100,000 ft² of retail space, connected to the Marshall Field's department store via pedway under Wabash Avenue.
The original façades of three small buildings on Wabash Avenue have been preserved and incorporated into this building.
The facade of the tower is articulated by horizontal bands at 6 floor intervals.
A newly commissioned sculpture by Richard Hunt titled 'We Will' was installed on the north sidewalk at the time of completion.
The building is connected directly to the Chicago Cultural Center and the Macy's at State Street by the underground Loop Pedway System.
